PPSU

  • Can PPSU withstand repeated steam sterilization without degrading?

    Yes. One of PPSU’s greatest strengths is its ability to withstand hundreds to thousands of autoclave cycles at temperatures up to 134°C. It resists hydrolysis, stress cracking, and discoloration better than many high-performance plastics like PC and PSU. This makes it ideal for reusable medical instruments, sterilization trays, and surgical components. 

  • Is PPSU stronger than other engineering plastics such as Ultem (PEI) or polycarbonate?

    PPSU offers higher impact strength than both PEI (Ultem) and PC while also providing superior chemical resistance. While PEEK surpasses it in structural strength and temperature resistance, PPSU remains a top choice when durability, sterilization stability, and flame resistance are required in combination. 

  • Can PPSU be machined to tight tolerances like metal or high-end plastics?

    Yes. PPSU machines work exceptionally well when proper tooling and heat control are used. It holds tight tolerances, maintains dimensional stability, and resists warping. However, heat buildup can cause whitening or surface defects if not controlled. 

  • Does PPSU absorb moisture, and will it affect machining or long-term performance?

    PPSU has low moisture absorption, significantly lower than nylon and many engineering plastics. This means dimensional stability is maintained even in humid or wet environments. Moisture does not significantly affect machining performance, but XC Machining stores PPSU properly to ensure maximum stability before production. 

  • Is PPSU safe for food, medical, and pharmaceutical applications?

    Yes. PPSU is available in FDA-compliant, biocompatible, and ISO 10993-tested grades suitable for medical devices, surgical tools, sterilization trays, dental instruments, fluid-handling connectors, and food-contact components. It also carries a UL94 V-0 flame rating, making it suitable for aerospace and electrical applications with strict fire safety requirements.
